OBE awarded to CEMS Director

Dr Humayun Ansari, Director of the Centre for Ethnic Minority Studies (CEMS), received an OBE in the 2002 New Year Honours list for services to Higher Education.

Dr Ansari on steps of Buckingham Palace

Dr Ansari is Senior Lecturer in the Department of History, with particular research expertise both in British History and Politics since 1880 and in Race and Ethnic Relations. It is his work in this latter field that has garnered this latest honour. He has worked for nearly twenty years in the community and through research and training to improve race relations. From 1987 he was Director of the Slough Industrial Language Centre and from 1990 he has been Director of the Centre for Ethnic Minority Studies, a research centre of the Royal Holloway University of London which provides advice and carries out research on racial equality in the workplace and in society.

Dr Ansari has worked both to enhance the skills of ethnic minorities and to break down negative attitudes and sterotypes in society. He has advised numerous bodies by: helping people develop the skills to operate effectively in a multi-cultural environment; designing services which are accessible and of equal quality for all, regardless of ethnic origin; and promoting the benefits of diverse workforces to business and to state services. He has served in a voluntary capacity in positions ranging from a committee of the Judicial Studies Board to the chairmanship of the Board of Management of the Slough Citizens Advice Bureau.

Professor Francis Robinson, Vice-Principal, said: "Dr Ansari's OBE is a timely acknowlegement of his achievement in building the College's Centre for Ethnic Minority Studies since 1990 and of his major contribution to race relations and cross-cultural understanding in areas ranging from the Cabinet Office, the Judiciary, NHS Health Trusts and higher education to the construction industry, and local government including Slough Borough Council."
